about this tour

In an area about the size of Tennessee, and with a population of 5.5 million, one would not expect as comprehensive a rail network as indeed exists. There are 2,550 miles of mainline, which includes 697 tunnels and over 2,700 bridges and it all began in Oslo in 1854 Connection with central Norway by means of the Roros Line in 1877 was a key link in the expanding network. The 1910s saw construction along the difficult Bergen to Finse stretch, at the summit of the glacial plateau. This linked to Oslo to provide a critical east – west link. Today, the Bergen Railway is the most popular inter-city run in the land, and one of the most scenic in Europe. The run requires about seven hours. It also links to the popular Flam Railway, which offers a one hour ride down to sea level and is judged to be a “must ride” for all visitors.

Norway is fantastic anytime! However, winter adds a great new dimension for those who have only traveled during peak summer season. In March there are roughly equal periods of daylight and dark, so you may both enjoy the passing scene while each night brings with it the opportunity to gaze upward and take in a great natural wonder of the Northern Lights, which even local Norwegians never take for granted.

The Flam Railway is considered one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world and is one of Norway’s major tourist attractions. This train journey has been called “The World's Most Beautiful Train Journey” The journey goes through the steep and narrow Flam valley, with views of mighty waterfalls, picturesque mountain farms and tall peaks. The railway was built between 1923 and 1940 in order to assure a transport route to the fjord from Bergen and Oslo. As one of the world’s steepest railway lines on normal track with a height difference of 2,835 feet and an average gradient of 1 in 18, it is proof of the most daring and skilful engineering exploits in Norwegian history. The 13 mile long railway line has 20 tunnels in total, most of them excavated by hand. There is even a horseshoe-shaped tunnel that spirals in and out of the mountain. Hotel check-in in Flam
