about this tour

Our full two and a half week tour will feature the two major railroads that remain in Peru. The Ferrocarril Central Andino running out of Lima and Peru Rail running out of Cuzco, Puno and Arequipa. Both railroads have become very busy over the past twenty years.

FC Central Andino is well known for being the highest railroad in the world although China has themn beat on the rail line to Lhasa, Tibet. However if one wants to experience rugged high altitude mountain railroading Peru is the place to go! The FCCA traverses some of the most difficult territory found on any railroad in the world; clinging to cliffsides, crossing high steel bridges over deep ravines, snaking up the sides of hills through switchbacks, a spiral tunnel and reverse curves before cresting the summit at 15, 693 feet in a 3/4 mile long tunnel surrounded by snowcapped peaks. This rail line has 61 bridges, 68 tunnels and 21 switchbacks on 4.37% grades. We will be traveling over 612 miles on the FCCA and the former Cerro de Pasco mining railway which is now operated by FCCA.

PeruRail is providing tourist and freight services in southern Peru. It was founded in 1999 with the main line between the port of Matarani to Arequipa to Cusco and Puno on Lake Titicaca and was formerly known as the Ferrocarril del Sur (Peru Southern Railway) and is on standard gauge. At La Raya Pass the altitude is 4,313 m (14,150 ft).

From Cusco, PeruRail provides passenger services on the 3 ft (914 mm) gauge Ferrocarril Santa Ana to Machu Picchu including five switchbacks. Another company called Inca Rail also now offers daily trains from Cuzco to Machu Picchu.
