Scenic Railway of the World, Gateway to the Yukon is the Slogan the White Pass & Yukon Railway has used since 1898. There is no other railroad quite like the White Pass, running through some of the North's most ruggedly beautiful terrain on 3.9% grades, with steam and unique diesels. After completion in 1900 it was considered the engineering marvel of its time. This railroad is carved along sheer rock cliffs, runs over sky-high wooden trestles, and through tunnels. Indeed, the rugged Alaska, British Columbia, and Yukon terrain and scenery are awesome.
Our last set of charters that we ran on this narrow gauge railroad was in 2004. We also ran charters in 2003, 2001, 2000, 1998, and 1997. After the 2004 tour railroad management did not want to run any additional railfan charters because they were operating so many cruise ship trains. Recently ownership and management has changed and the new owners have agreed to run our planned charters after the cruise ship rush of trains is completed for the year. We are looking forward in returning to the White Pass & Yukon Railroad.
We will have three charter trains pulled by steam and diesel. Steam locomotive No. 73, a 2-8-2 Baldwin built in 1947 will be used plus a General Electric unique shovel nose diesel and an Alco/Montreal low hood DL535. Our charters will cover the entire mainline between Skagway, Alaska and Carcross, Yukon, a distance of 68 spectacular miles. Plenty of photo run-bys will be made each day.
Individual arrivals at Whitehorse, Yukon and hotel check-in. There are two airlines that operate several non-stop daily flights between Vancouver, British Columbia and Whitehorse, Yukon.
🍽 lunch
Charter motorcoach transfer Whitehorse to Carcross where we board our first charter train pulled by one of the Alco/Montreal DL535's. Today we will operate our charter between Carcross and Fraser and return to Carcross with many photo-runs. Upon arrival back in Carcross our charter motorcoach will take us back to our hotel in Whitehorse.
🍽 lunch
Charter motorcoach transfer Whitehorse all the way to Skagway, Alaska. Upon arrival in Skagway we will have a workshop tour before boarding our charter train pulled by steam locomotive No. 73. The Baldwin 2-8-2 will take our train up the steep 3.9% grades all the way to Divide which is at the White Pass Summit. Here one of the GE Shovel Nose 90 Class diesels will be waiting to take charge of our train to continue on to Carcross. Many photo run-bys will be made between Skagway and Carcross. Upon arrival back in Carcross our charter motorcoach will take us back to our hotel in Whitehorse.
🍽 lunch
Charter motorcoach Whitehorse back to Carcross. Our charter train will be waiting pulled by steam locomotive No. 73. Today we will spend the entire day between Carcross and Divide at White Pass Summit. Here we will turn our train on the loop track and return to Carcross making as many photo run-bys as time will permit with steam. Upon arrival back in Carcross transfer back to our hotel.
